Favourite Shakespeare Characters? (Discussion)

Shakespeare is well known for being a genius in many ways, but especially for his uncanny ability to construct complex, multi-dimensional characters. From Othello to Romeo and from Lady Macbeth to Ophelia, Shakespearean characters are real and inspirational. Which one is your favourite?

I like Juliet. Against all odds, standing up to everyone, she stuck by her man. It’s not easy to confront your parents, your nanny and your whole world basically (includind your priest at the very end) and to do what you know in your heart is true. I wish I had her courage and stamina. A real Hero!

I love Feste from Twelfth Night. He is supposed to be the silly, foolish one – but towards the end of the play one realizes how much more wittier and darker he is. Ben Kingsley plays him really well in one of the film adaptations.

I like Brutus of Julius Caesar a lot, even Mark Anthony in the same play.

Brutus because he truly embodies the Roman spit, honor and selflessness. Anthony because of his charisma and the power he has over the masses.

These characters are larger than life. As for the ones I find the most real would be Lady Macbeth and Othello.

Lady Macbeth comes across as a strong character, quite like a modern contemporary power hungry woman, with whom guilt finally catches up, revealing that she too is human.

Othello because he displays the most common and disastrous aspect of the human psyche—-jealousy. One can relate to him.

Interesting, Gianna25! The relationship between Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony is definitely interesting.

I like Horatio from Hamlet. He is Hamlet’s most interesting foil and the kind of loyal and level-headed friend most people (especially crazy ones) would love to have.
