SCENE III
A park near the palace.
Enter three Murderers
First Murderer
But who did bid thee join with us?1
Third Murderer
Macbeth.
Second Murderer
He needs not our mistrust, since he delivers
Our offices and what we have to do
To the direction just.2
First Murderer
Then stand with us.
The west yet glimmers with some streaks of day:
Now spurs the lated traveller apace
To gain the timely inn; and near approaches
The subject of our watch.3
Third Murderer
Hark! I hear horses.
BANQUO
[Within] Give us a light there, ho!
Second Murderer
Then 'tis he: the rest
That are within the note of expectation
Already are i' the court.4
First Murderer
His horses go about.5
Third Murderer
Almost a mile: but he does usually,
So all men do, from hence to the palace gate
Make it their walk.6
Second Murderer
A light, a light!
Enter BANQUO, and FLEANCE with a torch
Third Murderer
'Tis he.
First Murderer
Stand to't.
BANQUO
It will be rain to-night.
First Murderer
Let it come down.
They set upon BANQUO
BANQUO
O, treachery! Fly, good Fleance, fly, fly, fly!
Thou mayst revenge. O slave!
Dies. FLEANCE escapes
Third Murderer
Who did strike out the light?7
First Murderer
Wast not the way?
Third Murderer
There's but one down; the son is fled.8
Second Murderer
We have lost
Best half of our affair.9
First Murderer
Well, let's away, and say how much is done.
Exeunt
FOOTNOTES
1 Who sent you?
2 We can trust him. He knows our orders,
and no one else would know except Macbeth himself.
3 Stay with us. There's still some light
in the sky. Those on a journey will probably ride their horses
paster to get to the castle in time before dark. Here comes the one
we've been watching out for.
4 It can only be Banquo, because all the
other invited guests have arrive already.
5 The horses going in another another
direction.
6 Yes, there's nearly a mile to travel.
Banquo usually walks from here to the palace entrance, just like
most people do.
7 Who put out the torch?
8 We have only killed Banquo. The
younger one escaped.
9 We've left the most improtant part of
our work unfinished.
SUMMARY
The sun is setting and the two murderers are then joined by a
third. They wait in a wooded park outside the palace for Banquo and
Fleance. When Banquo and Fleance approach on their horses and
dismount, they light a torch and the murderers attack. They kill
Banquo, but Fleance escapes. They leave with Banquo's body to find
Macbeth and tell him what happened.
